U12Bs win opening league match!
SNCC v Highgate, Sunday 18 April 2015
Team: Tom; Khairo; Haroon; Daniel (DJ); Finn; Toby; Sam; Nishal; Zaid
SNCC 127-5; Highgate 77 all out
This 20-20 game, played in traditional Marshes conditions – battleship grey skies and a bracing wind – saw a positive start to the season for the U12Bs against capable Highgate opposition. Put in to bat after losing the toss, Tom Davies and Khairo White batted maturely to put on 57 for the first wicket, with only a single being given for wides. Khairo [12] was followed by Haroon Ali [16] before the latter fell in Nelsonian tradition with the score on 111. Tom Davies went to his maiden half-century with successive fours, and retired not out on 52. Encouragingly, each of the batsmen gave few chances and waited to pick the bad ball. For a newly-assembled team, calling and running between the wickets was disciplined.
Highgate started well and batted deep. Whilst the initial overs saw few runs - Sam Salmon and Nishal Patel opening the bowling – Highgate batted confidently and the first wicket only fell at 48. A combination of three more quick wickets and controlled line and length then effectively stopped Highgate's momentum. Stand-out bowlers were Zaid Dawood – whose leg-spin will undoubtedly be a feature of the season - [4O-7R-2W]; Haroon Ali [3O-2M-2R-2W]; and Khairo, whose third wicket ended a game he had also started by opening the batting. Wicket-keeper Tom Davies also took a sharp catch off his bowling: an unusual form of dismissal at this level, as the crowd's excited reaction demonstrated.
The whole team contributed and, captained by DJ, with an excellent team spirit. Room to improve? Yes: field placing. But a good team in the making.
