Saturday 26 May: SNCC U11B - 87 for 7 vs Hampstead U11B - 67 all out. Won by 20 runs (league).
On a day when the sun shone brightly in East London, the Under 11B team were shining brightly too.
Facing a Hampstead B side buoyed by an astonishing cup win over Hornsey A, Stokey were put in to bat on an unusually dry wicket and faced an intimidating start from the Hampstead bowlers with the first batsman out for a duck. However, Jack and Joe responded well to the initial challenge and notched up more than 30 runs between them, Jack’s flamboyant style securing 16 runs alone. With runs being steadily accumulated throughout the batting order, the U11Bs secured a respectable total of 87 for 7.
Set to defend a similar target to their previous victory over Finchley C, the game was now in the hands of the bowlers. Curiously, Hampstead appeared to reverse their batting order, holding back their strongest batsmen until the lower middle-order. This immediately backfired, as Zakir and Joe snapped up three wickets in their opening burst. Hampstead recovered from this early setback and began to get some runs on the board. The turning point in the match came with Hampstead needing 39 runs off six overs, their best batsman going well and a possible win still within their sights. However, his dismissal to a fine direct hit from Alfie Gurtler saw the match swing in Stokey's favour and a clearly unhappy outgoing batsman discarding his kit in all directions en route to the pavilion. Stokey held their nerve to clean up the "tail" with Harry Boulding closing out the game as Hampstead subsided to 67 all out.
Focussed bowling, tight fielding and some cool heads under pressure saw the U11Bs secure their second win of the season. A special mention to Jameel behind the wicket with a keen (and vocal!) display of keeping on his debut.
