Saturday 21 May 2011: SNCC U10s - 161 for 2 vs North London U10s B - 19 for 10. Won by 142 runs (league).
After the disappointment of the friendly with North Middlesex being washed out in the week, glorious sunshine greeted the U10s league opener at the Marshes. A very young North London B team (made up entirely of U9s) competed gamely but were unsurprisingly outgunned by a battle-hardened Stokey. Both coaches agreed as they shook hands at the conclusion of a cordial encounter that the result illustrated the shortcomings of the restructured league format.
After a slow start, Stokey's batsmen accelerated to post a formidable 161 for 2. Hard-hitting partnerships between Harry Tanner (17) and Dillon Singh (6) and last pair Sal Whitehead (27) and Thomas Holden (10) saw Stokey finish with a flourish, albeit assisted by a steady flow of wides and no-balls.
North London were never in the hunt after three wickets fell in the first four overs. Concentration levels were quietly maintained, with tight bowling and excellent catching ensuring that Stokey kept their young opponents at arm's length. Two wickets apiece for the team's league debutants, Joe Kingsley-Smith (an U8!) and Harry Boulding, were a refreshing reminder of the very healthy competition for places that exists within the squad.
