Seniors cup result - thriller run chase in the dark

Tuesday 18 May 2011:  East 8 - 147 vs SNCC - 140 for 2.  Lost by 7 runs (cup).

Under grey skies Tom Ashman lost the toss and we were put in to the field.toss.  Winston opened with the new ball (a red one -significant later) and bowled a beautiful maiden.  Ali D at the other end was a bit wayward with his first as one of their openers went for the big hit.  Winston soon got the other one caught behind for 6.  Zamir stayed and scored freely, Ali D picking up their number 3 for 9.  At this point we were looking comfortable.  Winston went off, saving an over for the end, to be replaced by Felix.  Imtiaz slashed all the bowling for the next few overs and there was nothing we seemed to be able to do.  We were still picking up wickets at the other end, Ali D getting Zamir for 25 and Sadar another for 11.  Sadar eventually got Imtiaz for 40 caught and bowled. Their tail wagged and we picked up wickets (notably a fantastic catch from Josh). They ended with 147.

Winston   Four overs, 1 for 26

Felix and Ali D opened with a flurry, Ali straight into his stride, Felix picking up singles.  Both ran well and as we progressed past 50 after five overs team mates on the sidelines (your correspondent was scoring/umpiring) started to cheer and believe that it was gettable.  We continued, getting the 100 about the time Ali D had to retire (the rules) on 53 not out.  In came Winston and it was getting dark here (and cold).  We needed about 10 an over.  Felix and Winston tried valiantly, but not quite connecting.  The crowd on the side cheered every ball (they had a few watching too).  It was really quite dark now and we were wishing the pink ball was in play.  Felix went slashing for 49 with two to go.  We needed 11 off the last, we got 4.  We ended on 140 for 2
