Saturday 25 June 2011: SNCC U9s - 78 for 1 vs Wanstead U9s - 61. Won by 17 runs (friendly).
On a damp pitch which made scoring boundaries very difficult, another collection of Stokey Under 9's were a credit to the club, with a disciplined performance in all facets of the game. Hugo, captain of the Stokey team for the day, which featured four under 7's, won the toss and, egged on by his team mates, decided to bat first.
Stokey accumluated runs steadily and showed maturity beyond their years to reach a total of 78 with the loss, incredibly, of only one wicket, on a difficult pitch for scoring. Wanstead must be commended for some accurate bowling, but the way in which the Stokey boys prize their own wickets will serve them in very good stead in the future.
After having been on the receiving end of some bludgeoning blows from the Wanstead openers in the previous meeting, the opening spell of fantastic wicket-to-wicket bowling from Hugo and Michael, with a wicket apiece in the first eight deliveries of the Wanstead innings, swung the game decisively in Stokey's favour. All the boys' bowling continues to improve week by week and it was great to see two of the under 7's, Theo and William, take wickets with arrow straight deliveries. With Remy, another Under 7, keeping wicket in exemplary fashion, a run out chance was taken with vigour and Stokey ran out well deserved 17 run winners. The Wanstead team were very gracious in defeat and hopefully enjoyed the first of many visits to the Marshes.
