Hackney girls are set to join the borough’s U13 boys team at the home of cricket after winning through to the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Indoor Cricket Finals which will take place on Sunday 3 March.
Following in the footsteps of the triumphant Hackney U13 boys team who also won their qualifying group, the girls showed that they also have what it takes to succeed, with three wins out of three in their group at Harrow Leisure Centre. Hackney now joins seven other London borough teams hoping to clinch the title at Lord’s.
The Hackney girls opened their qualifying campaign in fine style, beating City of London 93-92 with five wickets spare. In their second match they enjoyed a convincing 88-39 win against Hounslow, before rounding off a successful day’s cricket with a 116-104 victory over Southwark.
Team manager Jo Byrnes was extremely pleased with her team’s performance:
“A lot of hard work has paid off,” she said. “The girls performed to a really high standard. They’ve dedicated a lot of time in preparing for this event over the last two weeks and they have really played well as a team. We were confident but we did not get past this stage last year in the competition. We couldn’t be sure, especially when we take into consideration the level of the other teams.”
“The Games are really important for us. Over a number of years I have been involved with different sports and there has always been a great atmosphere. That’s particularly the case for cricket.”
